Product photography is increasingly important, we live in a digital world that is driven by e-comm and the shop window to those platforms are created by we the photographers. I think you will all agree that when you go online to look for that particular item you are looking for, you can easily feel bombarded by a thousand options with the markets being so saturated.
From a business perspective its incredibly important to stand out from the masses, to create that increased chance of gaining that new customer. That’s where the professional photographer comes in.
It is our sole job to make something look good, to look desirable. Fundamentally the aim of the business and thus the photographer is to sell the lifestyle and there are a few ways we go about reaching that goal.
First of all we must have a hero’ image, this is the image that first greets the prospective buyer so it absolutely has to meet the standard and is usually a white background image but not exclusively in some cases (the latter I am seeing increasingly more often).
Secondly we have to provide a series of images that support the ‘hero’, these usually showcase the product’s features and provided the customer with a greater understanding of the product.
Thirdly it is incredibly important to show off the product in its ‘natural habitat’, so the customer can imagine how that product would fit into their own lifestyle. I would strongly argue that this is the most powerful image in the visual journey.
This three tier system is something I have consistently used for the past 5 years for several companies and it does works. When those three elements come together you are presented with a comprehensive selling package that not only has its uses on a company’s website but also for their social media and marketing strategies.
Case Studies:

The added element in some cases that can be beneficial is adding in product videos. These can either be nice to look at videos to show the product in use or be explainer type videos, either way it is showing off the product in an animated way. I can guarantee at some point in your life, it’s because of a video, that you’ve bought something.
I cannot stress enough how important quality product photography is, if the process is done right and the results are of a high standard it will stand the test of time and ensure that a business has the tools it needs to sell their products and ultimately grow.
